Water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH)

Solving wash-related challenges..

We launched the first stage of our menstrual health project in April 2023.

Our goals were connecting Silver Spring Secondary School to water and building a new toilet block. Ensuring access to clean water and hygienic changing spaces is a key pre-requisite for the safe use of reusable sanitary products (which Kite will promote through its menstrual health project). The construction of the toilet blocks (girls, boys, staff and a separate showering area) is well under way and is entering its final phase covering the interior and plumbing fittings (see photos above).

Our work in WASH involves both infrastructure input and a health promotion approach:

  • On the infrastructure side, we build toilet structures and provide a focal community water pump and water storage for the school we work with.

  • On the health promotion side, we run hygiene promotion activities to improve people’s knowledge of good sanitation and hygiene practices.

We are integrating WASH activities into other areas of our long-term work—from Mentorship and Menstrual Health to better serve the community we work in.

Silver Spring Secondary School is a community school in Kibera. The school has population of 250 students and 11 teachers. Our goal is to ensure the school has access to safe water and hygienic toilets that girls are able to use.
